Choosing what to wear for your outdoor family photoshoot can feel a little daunting — but it doesn’t have to be! The goal isn’t to look perfect; it’s to feel comfortable and confident while creating timeless images that reflect your family’s connection. Here’s my go-to guide to help you plan outfits that photograph beautifully in natural light and Dorset’s stunning outdoor backdrops.

Why Outfits Matter

The colours, fabrics and tones you wear will shape the overall mood of your photos. Soft, neutral shades blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings — think gentle beiges, creams, muted blues, blush tones and earthy greens. These hues allow the focus to stay on your family, your connection, and the gorgeous Dorset scenery.

Keep It Timeless

Trends come and go but natural tones never date. Avoid overly bright colours or black, as these can feel heavy in photos. Instead, opt for warm whites, taupe, sage, dusty pink or soft denim. These colours photograph beautifully against beach tones, fields or woodland backdrops.

Mix, Don’t Match

Coordinating doesn’t mean identical outfits! Pick two or three complementary colours and build around them. Mix textures like linen shirts, cotton dresses, knit cardigans or denim. Layering adds depth and interest while keeping things cohesive. For instance, mum could wear a flowy dress in cream, dad a light khaki shirt and jeans and the kids a mix of soft neutrals and simple patterns.

Add Texture and Movement

Photos come alive when there’s a sense of motion — wind catching a dress, little ones running, or hair blowing in the breeze. Choose fabrics that move with you, like linen, chiffon, or cotton. Avoid stiff or shiny materials. Texture photographs beautifully too — knitted cardigans, lace detailing, or soft layering pieces add depth and warmth to your photos.

What to Avoid

Logos or characters - they distract from your faces.

Neon or overly bright tones - they reflect colour onto skin.

Heavy patterns or clashing prints - keep it simple and cohesive.

These small choices make a huge difference when it comes to achieving that soft, cohesive look that defines my work.

Comfort Over Perfection

Your photos are about connection, not perfection. Choose outfits that allow you to move freely and play with your children. Barefoot on the beach or comfy sandals in the park look and feel natural. I’ll always guide you through outfit planning before your session.

Final thoughts

Ultimately, the best outfit is the one that feels like you. When your family feels relaxed and confident, the love and joy you share naturally shine through. My role is to make you feel comfortable in front of the camera and guide you every step of the way, from planning to final gallery delivery.
